MEDIA ADVISORY-Malaika Muhammad Day

Recognized hero encourages compassion, community and creativity in observance of city’s “Malaika Muhammad Day”

HOUSTON–When a deadly tornado and flooding ripped through the city of Houston over two years ago in May, Malaika Muhammad stepped up as a saviour for several men and women who could have lost their lives. “There is no way I could not intervene,” she told one news outlet.

While not doing it for honor or applause, Ms. Muhammad made local and national news headlines. She received recognition from council member Dwight Boykins (District D) and a proclamation from the City Houston declaring June 23rd as “Malaika Muhammad Day”.

In the midst of hurricane season, Ms. Muhammad is using her proclamation and platform to encourage all citizens to practice what she calls the Three C’s: Community, Compassion, and Creativity. Not just for a day, but as a way of life.

“The Three C’s are the principles I live by and what motivates me. That sense of compassion and community is what moved me to want to save others from the flood waters,” says Ms. Muhammad, a holistic beauty practitioner who owns UrbHol Vibe Lifestyling Studio.

Ms. Muhammad’s experience two years ago inspired her even more to connect with other leaders and groups who are practicing the Three C’s in their communities. One of those organizations is the popular, touring Hip-Hop Detoxx, which uses hip-hop as a tool to help youth tackle challenges such as violence, suicide, peer pressure, unstable homes, and lack of self-worth. Ms. Muhammad plans to use these alliances to develop a local youth-based program rooted in the Three C’s.

“I was definitely humbled by the city proclamation and grateful I was able to be of assistance to others in their moment of need. And I didn’t want to just reduce this proclamation to nice paper and a frame. I wanted to do something that’s worthy of celebration every June 23rd by spreading the Three C’s,” she says.
